Internal Conflict in AFA over Player Amnesty Decision

The AFA's Disciplinary Court decision to allow suspended players to participate in the 2026 Apertura's first round has sparked a scandal. Committee president Fernando Mitjans expressed displeasure upon learning of the ruling through the press, accusing colleagues of repeated leaks.

Internal Conflict in AFA over Player Amnesty Decision

Buenos Aires, January 22 (NA) – The Disciplinary Court of the Argentine Football Association (AFA) announced that players carrying over suspensions from the previous season will be eligible to play in the first matchday of the 2026 Apertura Tournament, a decision that has caused an internal conflict within the governing body. According to an investigation by Noticias Argentinas (NA) news agency, the conflict erupted because the amnesty was published in the Official Bulletin of the body that defines sanctions in Argentine football without the knowledge of president Fernando Mitjans. Later, an audio was leaked in which the head of the Disciplinary Court stated that he learned of the ruling and its publication through journalists. "I regret finding out through the press. If the press found out before us... well, that's how things are," Mitjans asserted with an annoyed tone, making it clear he was not aware of the publication in the Official Bulletin. Meanwhile, within the AFA, it is claimed that publishing the article without prior notification to the head of the body is due to the discontent of several of its members with the president himself due to repeated leaks.
